Peter Weibel (1944-2023) Austria / Germany

Support culture and art

Peter Weibel is Europe’s leading curator, media artist and long-time director of the renowned Centre for the Arts and Media in Karlsruhe, the first city in Germany to be included in the UNESCO Global Creative City Network in the category Media Arts. He was born in Odessa but fled to Germany with his parents, the Russian Germans. His books and lectures deal with contemporary art issues, history and theory of media as well as philosophy. As an artist, he is a pioneer and a sort of a “pacemaker” of a new digital culture. His curatorial and artistic credo is: “The artist opens a door in a world that nobody sees“. The exhibitions organised by him became a mass spectacle, at which the audience first saw what the time, we are living in, is about. He has received many international awards for his artistic and curatorial work. Among other things, he is an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts in Moscow and “Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts  et des Lettres”.
